1 - 2 - 3 Steps To Business

1. Find a company with products and service or products you can feel passionate about and still see yourself selling a year from now. Or start your own products or service. Decide how you will sell (home party, online, events, fairs, booths, store front, etc) 
Read "Where is Success?" and "Choosing a Business." Commit to at least ONE YEAR!

2. Create a business name that tells people what you are doing or selling, is easy to spell and remember and that has a .com URL still available for. Use things that mean something in your life (like names, places, hobbies, colors, etc). Consider having it 
start with a letter of the beginning alphabet or a number for alpha listings.

3. Register your business name with your state. Go to your state.gov web site or local bank to register this name. Register the web site URL at http://www.godaddy.com 

4. Apply for a city or state business license if required. Get a tax resellers tax number if 
you must collect sales tax in your state. Get IRS form http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p911.pdf   Get their free stuff for businesses at http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=101169,00.html

5. Open a separate business checking account and debit card. US Bank offers them for FREE.  FREE Checks. IRS wants to see a clear separation of personal money and business money and a paper trail of all income and expense. Get paper receipts for every expense. Write receipts for all income.

6. Get a PO BOX to protect your home address on the internet. Consider a business phone or extra phone line for the internet for your business. Get FREE Fax service
Get an 800# for business calls.

7. Apply for a merchant account  and sign up to take Paypal. Studies have shown taking credit cards will increase the size of your orders. Lots of merchant options!

8. Build a web site hosted at http://www.wahmshoppes.com $6 a month, free e-store 
and shopping cart, 300 MB space, 5 emails, Great tech support.

9. Create a web site with an HTML software like Microsoft Front Page or Eversoft
Or have some else make it for you. Do a search on www.google.com  for free HTML editor software. Find resources HERE

10. Decide who is your niche market specifically. Look at competitors. Design sales materials for your targeted niche market. Flyers, coupons, post cards, catalogs, etc. 
Order FREE Business Cards, labels and stamper. Read "Do What You Do Best"?

11. Create a record keeping system to show all your income and all your expenses 
and profit for taxes. Quick Books, Quicken or Microsoft Money are good. Read 
Tax Savvy for Small Businesses
Check with an accountant for special rules for your state. Set aside 25% of profits for taxes. Read "How To Pay Taxes on Your Business"

12.  Go to the Small Business Association http://www.sba.gov/ or SCORE office in your area for help with planning. Send a Press Release to your local paper, radio, and TV. Write a business plan.

13. Get more exposure by joining several www.yahoogroups.com on subjects connected to your product. Use your URL in your signature line. Be an active participating member not just a constant ad. Lots of small business groups, parents groups, etc.

14. Create a newsletter at www.yahoogroups.com or www.smartgroups.com  Put a join box on your web site. It gives you a reason to contact these opt in customers with more info on your product, specials, coupons, articles, etc.

15. Have a banner, button and graphics created for your web site. You will want to use these to swap with other web sites. Link swaps will help your search engine rating. Many times you can hire these made or barter with another wahm company or two.

16. Submit your web site to search engines. Make sure your web site is optimized for the best results. Have key words, a great description, and text on all pages.

17. Give more than expected. Send a surprise with each order. Respond quickly to all requests. Send orders out the next business day. Read "Give Rather than Get"

18. Support other work at home businesses! Barter your products with others to get them seen by customers. Ask for a customer comment from those who barter or buy. Put them on your web site. Offer your products as a free prize for other web site drawings for added exposure. 

19. Advertise. In the beginning set a budget and get the most for your buck. Trade advertising where you can. Write articles of interest to your niche market and offer them free to other web sites with your URL on the bottom of every article. Start advertising online and offline. Network with others who can help you find more customers. Swap Flyers with Mom Packs,  Swap Flyers with WWWPacks, Swap Flyers with Mommy Mailers

20. Increase your profit by finding your product supplies at wholesale prices. Search www.google.com  for wholesale vendors. Most will have a $100 minimum to get up to 50% off retail.

21. Offer your product at wholesale (up to 50% off retail) to other stores and businesses with a minimum purchase (usually $100). This gives you larger orders and added product exposure. and offer an affiliate program to give others commission when sending buying customers to your site, Mal's mtracker is free.

22. Make sure your web site is sticky (brings customers back again and again). Have free things, downloads, coloring sheets, tips, newsletter, contest, etc. Give all customers a discount coupon in their order to bring them back again.

23. Schedule regular working hours for your business. Home business allows you to be flexible but you must work your business so do not be too flexible. Make it a goal to make 5-10 contacts each day to keep your business growing.

24. Use your domain name email for all email. It puts your URL in front of everyone. Kay@mypreciouskid.com tells them where to find me. Kay@aol.com does not.

25. Your front page of the web site needs to tell customers what you offer, why they should buy it form you to solve a problem or need of theirs and tell them how to order is easy steps. Keep added links and distractions to a minimum.

26. Build a sales force team by sharing the business opportunity with every contact and customer. If you do not ask them if they are interested, you are deciding no for them.

27. Make sure you price your products to a) be competitive b) make you a profit c) allow you to wholesale them d) tell people they are of value. The biggest mistake most new businesses make is under pricing. Rule of thumb is cost (including labor) times 2 equals WHOLESALE, wholesale times 2 equals RETAIL.

28. Have an DEBUT party in your home to show your friends and family your new business. Ask them to bring a friend. Tell the world about your new business.

29. Create coupon packs. I get coupons from other wahm vendors, and add them to my own. I put them all in a 5.5 x 8.5 envelope. Read my story! This has brought me lots of traffic. I give them away to moms everywhere I go, letting me write off my shopping mileage by turning it into networking miles.

30. Swap links with other web sites with a similar niche market. I choose to do my link exchanges as a coupon listing. Please add your coupons to my pages.
